All activities start and finish at the Marina, with sailing on Greenwich Bay and adjacent waters.

WHAT IS BIG BOAT SAILING?
Course 100
MONDAYS & TUESDAYS
1630-1930
June 20 through August 2

Introduction to the role of sailing on keel boats including:
-
Preliminary discussion of and walk thru practices of docking and departing, mooring lines and fenders.

Discussions and walk thru of safety issues including man overboard recovery.
-
Basic rules of the road.
-
Practical applications of navigation and charting. Position fixing.
-
An overview of the arts and sciences of rigging, handling, sailing a 35’ keel boat with asymmetrical spinnakers on a bow sprit.

Crew coordination, teamwork, and communication
-
Hoisting lowering reefing trimming the sails on a keel boat
-
Use of tools for sail shape adjustment.
-
Preparing, setting, trimming, gybing dropping the spinnaker.

SPEEDING IT UP
Course 200
THURSDAY & FRIDAY

June 23 through August 12

Prerequisite Course 100 OR the ability to demonstrate competent execution of the content of Course 100.
Builds on Course 100 with a view to developing a crew roster capable of racing in Wednesday evening races.
Includes:

Integrating boat and sail handling with crew coordination/teamwork

The tactics and strategy of yacht racing.

Higher performance boat speed
-
Rig tuning topics
-
Sail trim.
-
Starts and mark rounding’s (with bigger, slower responding and more expensive assets than 420 dinghies)
-
Avoiding bumper cars rounding’s.
-
Intro discussion of tactics and strategies for distance races.
